Choices in Under-the-Counter Refrigeration

by Jase Garrity

There are many options when it comes to under counter refrigeration. The pricing can vary by thousands of dollars. If you are choosing for one to be free standing and not built into any cabinetry, it can be inexpensive. If choosing a free standing version, I would go with a Danby or an Avanti, which will run you around $700.00. If purchasing one to fit into an under counter application there are several choices.

There is a Whirlpool model with a stainless door (wur50x24hz) that is priced very reasonably under $1000.00 and has nice shelving and lighting. It works well as under a counter application. The next level would be KitchenAid which has a glass door, metal shelving and LED lighting that come on when you are close to the appliance. This is a very impressive application for a reasonably priced model. (under $2000.00) The next models greatly increase in pricing. There are two Sub-Zero models id-24r which are refrigerator drawers and uc-24bg which is a glass door refrigerator. The quality and workmanship are obvious in either model and the warranties on both reflect that. The sealed system is covered for 5 years with the customer only paying the labor. The drawer model is expensive (over $4000.00) but the glass door version is around $2400.00 My final choice is a brand called True, mostly known for their commercial refrigeration. They are solidly built like a Sub-Zero with a similar warranty. The model I chose would be a glass door version model tur-24-r-sg-b priced around $3100.00 They have a stainless interior and stainless shelves. One thing that separates them is the interior lighting which has 7 different options. There are several different price points to choose from depending on your budget. All of these under the counter refrigerator choice can be found at one of Don's eight locations!
