How to Store Your Wine Properly

Wine drinking has been going on for thousands of years so the art of storing it has basically been perfected. If you plan on starting a collection and not drinking a bottle of wine for a time, here are some important tips to get the most out of your wine for the future.

1. Cool Temperature

Wine doesn’t fair well when heat is beating down on it. The warmth can quickly age a wine, especially if the temperature is over 70 °F. You want your wine to be anywhere from 45-65 °F to ensure it will taste it’s very best when you open it. With a Thermador Built-In Wine Cooler, you can set the controls to whatever temperature you desire so that you never worry about your wine aging.

2. Dark place

Sunlight and most lights in general can have a negative affect on wine. Just like too warm of temperature can prematurely age wine, too much light can do the same – which is exactly what we don’t want. By storing wine in a Thermador Wine Cooler appliance, you will happily find that the glass door is tinted for that very reason.

3. Placement

Odd as it may sound, the way wine is placed is important if there is a cork involved. For wine bottles with screw caps or plastic corks, this doesn’t apply much. You can store those in whatever way floats your boat. For all wine bottles with corks, storing them sideways is the correct way. This is so the wine will stay in contact with the cork making certain it doesn’t dry out.

4. Leave it alone! (Unless you plan to drink it)

The last step is pretty easy, or rather hard depending on how much you want to drink your newly stored wine. You just don’t touch it. The more vibration going on could damage the wine and release unwanted chemical reactions in the liquid.

Finding a place to store your wine may be difficult if you don’t already have a cellar made specifically for wine. At our appliance store, we have wine coolers made specifically to be placed in your home. Take a look at our Thermador appliances - the wine connoisseur in you will appreciate it.
