How to Clean a Washing Machine

by Meg Madison-Krol

Looking to improve the performance of your washer? When customers come into Don’s Appliances and ask one of our sales associates about a new washer, they will almost always ask them what happened to their old washer and what other features they would like to see if they had the ability. In many cases, customers often mention their old washer smelled and left black spots on their clothes. One of the main reasons this happens is because they haven't ever cleaned their washer.

It is a good idea to periodically clean your washer because not only will your machine benefit greatly but so will your clothes. Mineral deposits and soap scum can clog hoses, restricting water flow and mold can collect on your gaskets and in the dispensers which can cause a nasty odor.

Steps in Cleaning Washer:

  1. Begin by wiping the door seal and gaskets with a towel soaked in vinegar to loosen up the grime.
  2. Set your washer to run a long cycle at the hottest setting.
  3. Add 2 cups cleaning or distilled white vinegar and ½ cup of baking soda mixture to the tub or through the dispenser.
  4. In a top load washer, run the water and let the machine agitate for a few minutes. You can then stop the machine and let the tub soak for an hour before finishing the cycle.
  5. Remember to wipe down the outside of the machine with vinegar and water and wipe out the door seals/gaskets again.
  6. Leave the door open to let the washer air out and dry.

Remember, a clean washer is a happier person doing laundry!
