There are many odors associated with a dishwasher throughout its lifetime. Here are a few odors that you can expect, what's normal, what's not, and what to do to get rid of them:
Causes of Odors
* "Newness" odor which often times occurs when you receive a new dishwasher that has been sealed for a long period of time. This will disappear after running it several times with a detergent.
* Trapped particles around the inlet pipe.
*Plastic vs. stainless interior: plastic is a porous material and can retain odors and discolor over time whereas stainless tubs are germ and odor resistant.
* Improper installation: If the drain hose is improperly installed, it can cause dirty water to back fill into dishwasher causing an odor.
*Improper use of detergent, using to much can cause soap build up which leads to odors and issues.
* The most common cause of odor in a dishwasher comes from bacteria growth that feed on trapped food and grease in the strainer, holes in the wash arm, and edges of the door.
Solutions
Believe it or not, there is maintenance that comes with a dishwasher in order to prevent odors and to get the best performance and longevity out of the appliance. There are many cleaning remedies available, but here are some basic and safe ways to keep your dishwasher clean or remove any odors that occur:
* Running the dishwasher at least once a week no matter the load size.
* Properly installed drain hose.
*Using the proper amount of dish detergent.
* Clean the drain filter, spray arms, seal gasket around the door, dishwasher racks, and tub.
* Manufactured approved cleaning agents (i.e. Affresh tablets). This will have the safe and correct amount of cleaning agents to fight odor causing residue and any lime or mineral build up. We recommend using it once per month.
