When choosing a tub for your bathroom, are you looking to make a wow, unique, or architectural statement? If so, a freestanding tub is the way to go. Or is something other than the tub going to be the focal point or you are limited in space....go with a drop in. Let’s break down some differences between the two:
A freestanding tub is finished on all sides. Composition can be cast iron, acrylic, marble, concrete, or copper. It can be as traditional as a slipper tub with claw feet or a curved or sleek lined piece that resembles a sculpture.
The first consideration needs to be the size of your bathroom and how much space you will have for the tub. These tubs can be considerably larger, but the plus side is you have flexibility in placement (assuming all necessary plumbing is available or will be with a remodel). Speaking of plumbing...it will be coming from the floor. Faucets for these tubs tend to be more expensive, take up more space, and your choices are less than that of a deck mount faucet. A big plus is, you typically (unless you have added air or whirlpool options) only need a plumber to do the installation...savings on labor costs! These are wonderful tubs to soak in due to the depth, but think of that depth when you go to clean the interior. Also, keep in mind there is no storage space or area to set things down on. That glass of wine is staying in your hand or that book better be a paper back!
A drop-in tub is exactly what the name suggests; the unit will be set into a pre-built deck and is not finished on the sides. Nine times out of ten, they are placed against a wall making the tub blend into the room. Most drop-in’s are sold with jets and/or air choices. These are more labor intense due beside the plumber, you will need a carpenter to build the deck, an electrician to wire for the motor, tile guy or fabricator to finish the deck. Acrylic is the most popular material used in manufacturing. You will never have a problem finding a deck mount faucet in any style or finish and with or without a handheld spray. You have space around the tub for towels, soaps, candles and, YES, you can set that glass of wine down.
