How to Get Ink Out of Dryer

Our experts at Don’s Appliances have some tips to help get your dryer shining like new again.  Use the same recommendations for both the paddles and drum.   They’ll clean the same way.

    1. Unplug your dryer.  That’s the very first thing to do.
    2. Try the simplest solution first, which is dish soap.  Dawn’s dish soap is the best at removing ink stains.  Combine it with some warm water and use a clean towel to wipe off the paddles and drum.
    3. If that doesn’t work, try a product like a Magic Eraser by Mr. Clean.  Those are very good.
    4. Wipe out afterward with a damp clean towel.
    5. Make sure the dryer is dry before putting in wet clothes.
    6. If that doesn’t work, try bleach.  The easiest way is to take a towel and soak it in a 1:1 mixture of warm water and bleach.  Then wring out the towel, throw it in the dryer, and turn on the dryer until the towel is dry (about 20 minutes).
    7.  Make sure you clean your dryer very well with fresh water after using bleach.  You don’t want to put clean clothes in and risk getting bleach stains on your clothes.
    8. You can also try a product like “Goo Gone."  It’s critical to make sure that any chemical cleaner you use is inflammable.  Heating elements and dryers don’t mix.

Keep in mind that once the stain dries, it’s not going to come off on your clothes.  Just wipe out as much as you can using one of the above steps, and make sure the dryer is clean and dry before putting in your next load.

How to Get Gum Out of Dryer

A new pack of gum in the pocket is a feeling of relief—until you forget about it and put it through a wash and dry. At its worst, gum that's gone through the dryer can create a mess, although there are tricks for removing gum from clothes , so it's not the end of the world if it happens. Luckily, it's not that hard to treat if the gum happens to fall out of pockets during the dry cycle. Here's what you do to remove gum from dryer drums.

    1. For safety, unplug your dryer before beginning the process.
    2. Next, you can try a few methods (or even a combination) using ice, a hair dryer, or Goo Gone. We recommend starting with a hair dryer on a low setting, passing it over residual gum on the drum, and wiping it away with a paper towel.
    3. If that doesn't take care of the issue, pass over trouble areas with an ice cube. Leave on the spot for a few seconds, and once it solidifies, remove it using a putty knife or a flat tool.
    4. For stubborn stuck-on gum, bring out the Goo Gone. Pour a small amount onto a paper towel and gently rub over affected areas. Depending on the severity, this might take a few passes. If you prefer a more natural method, try swapping the Goo Gone with white distilled vinegar.

How to Get Crayon out of Dryer

A row of crayons on a white background

Opening the dryer to a kaleidoscope of colors sounds playful on paper, but dealing with melted crayon in reality can be a hassle. Luckily, wax—which is what crayons are made of—is a little more forgiving than gum, so if this situation does happen, it's most likely not the end of the road for your dryer. A little know-how can solve the problem easily. Just do the following.

    1. As always, work safe. Unplug your dryer before cleaning the interior.
    2. Once your dryer is off, begin the first phase by scraping off traces of wax using a flat item like a card or putty knife.
    3. Once most of the crayon streaks have been removed, go over them with a hair dryer, then wiping away the melted wax with a paper towel.
    4. By now, most of the crayon should be removed, but there's most likely still residue on the dryer walls. To remove the build-up, take a cloth with WD-40 and pass over the entire dryer drum; allow it to dry before passing over the drum again with a clean cloth doused lightly in dish soap and water.

How to Get Smell Out of Dryer

Sometimes, it's not the visual clues that tell you your dryer is dirty, it's the odor. While not too common, dryer smells do happen. In any case, it's a good idea to clean the inside of your dryer to promote a healthy laundry space, so here's what you need to do.

    1. You know the drill—unplug the dryer before cleaning.
    2. Then, using a vacuum or shop vac, go over the inside to pick up any lint, debris, and foreign objects.
    3. Once vacuumed, create a solution using two parts water to one part bleach; spray or wipe the inside with the solution.
    4. Allow the solution to air dry with the door open.
    5. After drying, remove any residue of the solution using a clean, damp towel
    6. Allow the dryer drum to dry once more with the door open

If all of these steps don't work, a new dryer is probably in your future if you can’t live with those stains. We'd love to help you select the right one for you.
