High above the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh’s trendy Gateway Towers Apartment Complex is one gorgeous kitchen remodel. The team at LUXE, led by Brent Hugus and Tyler Folnsbee, worked to meet all of their client’s expectations and more.
A Contemporary Transformation
Their client, Jean Ann Hattler, was looking to transform her kitchen into a contemporary, modern and clean-looking space with ample storage. “Whenever my guests arrive, they are captivated by the view from my 24th floor. It is the quintessential Pittsburgh moment: the confluence of the three rivers. It always stuns and delights them. I wanted a kitchen that would stun and delight as well.”
To deliver on such a space, Folnsbee wanted to create a kitchen that was symmetric and featured straight edges in order to really show off the jaw dropping view. He also commented that they “wanted to use every inch of cubic space in the kitchen. We optimized space by installing a corner cabinet with a pull-out mechanism and an oversized wall cabinet that opens electronically to provide a ton of storage.”
Incorporating Bosch Appliances
To achieve this look, LUXE added an island in the middle of the space that features an induction cooktop with a downdraft behind it. The team chose fully integrated paneled refrigeration to create a clean symmetrical look. The kitchen also includes a built-in 30” convection oven that lines up perfectly with a speed oven and warming drawer fully surrounded by floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.
Hattler chose Bosch because of the clean look of fully integrated refrigerators. LUXE incorporated a German brand of cabinets, Eggersmann, so continuing with the German look and theme felt natural. While some homeowners mix and match appliances, this kitchen features a full suite of Bosch.
- The refrigerator is custom-paneled. The homeowner chose panels to match the cabinetry and the refrigerator’s Optiflex Hinge allows doors open and close with no damage to cabinetry.

- Situated on the island, the 30” induction cooktop features AutoChef® Technology, which maintains precise cooking temperatures. To ease sight lines, the downdraft can be lowered when not in use.

Tying the Look Together
For the ultimate in modern, the kitchen was stylized with poly-gloss grey brown cabinets, which makes for easier cleanup. The Silestone quartz countertop is surrounded by a smoked oak peninsula bar top, and porcelain tile floors connect the look together. For a bit of warmth, the bottom wall cabinets have LED lights, and the painted glass backsplash adds an artistic touch.
