Renovation Reimagined

When Susan and Dennis Patton of Moon Township started their house hunt, they had one goal in mind: more space to entertain family and friends.

“We had been looking for a house for about six years,” Susan said. “We finally found one that we liked, but knew it needed some work. We asked Todd Klippa, the owner of TK Construction, to come to the house before we purchased it. We walked from room to room telling him our vision – tear this down, open this wall up. He said everything was in the realm of possibility.”

From there, the Pattons bought the house, brought in architect Robert Gaskill to draw up the designs and hired TK Construction for the renovating.

Redrafting a 90s creation

Built in the late 1990s, the home lacked style and was not very functional. The house was very compartmentalized, with a small and narrow kitchen. The first step in the remodel was to change the footprint of the home. A 6-foot addition, that once was a sunroom, was added to the existing kitchen and two load-bearing walls were demolished to open up the space. With that, the kitchen was now an open 16x30 foot space.

To modernize the room, quartz countertops were installed around the perimeter of the kitchen and on the island. Shades of white and grey were used throughout the space, from the walls to the cabinets, and engineered hardwood in 7” planks were put down. Two beautiful chandeliers were installed above the island, and recessed lighting added warmth to the space.

In shopping for hoods, the Pattons weren’t thrilled with any of the prebuilt options, so TK Construction built a custom creation. Klippa said they “took elements from different hoods and combined them. It was built out of poplar wood with a BEST insert and was painted grey to match the greys and whites in the rest of the home.” Next up, it was time to shop for appliances.

A lineup of stainless steel Jenn-Air kitchen appliances.

Reworking with clean lines and dependability

The team at TK Construction recommended that the Pattons install Jenn-Air appliances. Based on the combination of quality, functionality and price point, Jenn-Air offers many styles and features to choose from. Plus, the kitchen had a contemporary, modern look, and the sleek simple look of Jenn-Air appliances coincided well with the other design elements.

The homeowners said that, put simply, they “liked the way they looked! The handles on our refrigerator, double oven and dishwasher are all the same and all of the appliances are stainless.” They then spoke to each appliance and why they chose what they did:

  • REFRIGERATION: Jenn-Air Built-in side-by-side refrigerator - JS48PPDUDB
“We knew we wanted a large refrigerator, one that was built-in. We wanted a side-by-side with a freezer that was larger than most freezers in a side-by-side, and we also wanted a water dispenser on the door. Our Jenn-Air had everything we wanted.”

  • COOKTOP36” 6-burner gas cooktop - JGC7636BP
“Our range is a 6-burner cooktop, each with pick up grates that make it easy to clean.”

  • OVEN: 30” Double Wall Oven with MultiMode® Convection System - JJW2830DP
“We love the features on the double oven and all the controls are on a sleek touch pad with a digital clock and background. You can even change the background photo to match the seasons! It’s a very clean look and easy to maintain.”

  • DISHWASHER: 30” TriFecta™ Dishwasher with 46 dBA - JDB9000CWP
“The dishwasher is extremely quiet. It’s sleek and modern looking with a hidden control panel, and it has stainless steel on both the interior and exterior.”

Reflecting on the remodel

Gaskill said of the finished product: “The kitchen was designed to be the hub of the house, so it was made much larger and the layout was opened. Now, it’s perfect for entertaining.”

The Pattons are thrilled with the finished product, saying that if they’re home, they’re in the kitchen 90% of the time. They’ve gotten so much use out of the open space, from daily family meals at the peninsula to large holiday events with friends. Now that the kitchen has a nice flow, it no longer feels congested and there is plenty of room for everyone to move about and enjoy one another.
