How to Grill An Onion | Napoleon Grill

Cutting onions that are big enough to grill is essential for getting tender and evenly cooked onions. If you cut your slices too small, they’ll just fall into your grill. If you cut it in half, you might only have one side soft and charred, while the middle might still be raw.
The best and easiest way for cooking onions on the grill is to start by cutting each of the ends off. Follow the length of the onion and you want to cut rings. Make sure these are thicker rings, so they hold together for the grilling process.
Brush both sides of the slices you made with olive oil. This will add a glisten but also some fattiness. You can season this however you like, but we chose to season these with ¼ teaspoon of salt and oregano on each side.
These onions go great on burgers, they’re a great pizza topper or can actually just serve by themselves. You can even make a grilled onion dip with blue cheese and balsamic vinegar. Grilled onions can be used for almost anything. Bring your grill up to around 450 to 500 degrees.
Depending on the thickness of your slices, each side will take about 3 to 5 minutes to cook. If you notice moisture on the top of the onions, this is a good indicator that they are cooking well. You can cook these until tender, or if you prefer them softer you can cook them for longer.
Top these off with ore olive oil, and put them on your burgers, pizzas, in an onion dip. Use perfectly charred grilled onions for anything you want.
Ingredients:
- 1 whole red onion
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ oregano
Method:
- Preheat grill on high to 450 to 500 degrees
- Cut ends off of onion and create thicker ring-shaped slices
- Coat onions with olive oil
- Season with salt and oregano
- Place on grill and cook for 3 – 5 minutes on each side or until reaching desired tenderness
- Serve with any dish or dip
