The Holidays—a time for red, green and glitter décor appointed precisely throughout the house, a time for sharing classic meals with friends and family (in-person or virtually this year) and a time for giving back.
Don’s Appliances has been running our #DonsGreatGiveback campaign throughout the year, partnering with a different charity organization each time: the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest PA, and Ronald McDonald House Charities. For two weeks in December we’re once again partnering with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Why Support the Food Bank?
As a retailer of at-home appliances, it's a natural fit to partner with local food banks as we've done for decades, but today, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe it's the most impactful and immediate way to help our community. The unstable state of the economy has affected us all in different ways. Sadly, some of our neighbors are unsure of where their next meal will come from and with schools switching to virtual learning, children are at risk of malnutrition without access to school lunch programs. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has been impacted by COVID-19 in many ways:
- 25,000 grab 'n go meals have been distributed to kids in Allegheny County in the last 4 weeks
- 90% of their phone calls are for food assistance, many are from people seeking assistance for the first time
- 12,000 boxes of food are being packaged and distributed to households through low-touch, drive up distributions
- There has been a 543% increase in demand for food through their Compassion Corner Emergency Food Program
In addition to the impact COVID-19 has had on the Food Bank, they are in the midst of a major capital improvements they’ve names the “Grow. Share. Thrive” campaign. In order to bridge divides, and help our community grow and thrive, the Food Bank is expanding their campus with a Neighborhood Community Education Kitchen, a Staff Café and a Break Room where staff, guests and volunteers can enjoy a meal and converse. With the addition of the Education Kitchen, Food Bank beneficiaries will have the opportunity to learn healthy eating strategies, nutritional information, and how to cook delicious recipes from foods received.
We are committed to helping the state of our economy and see it as an honor and privilege to partner with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to help provide relief.

From December 7th through December 19th we will donate 10% of all in-stock appliance purchases to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to help provide meals to Pittsburgh families in need (every dollar donated can help provide 5 meals!) and fund their Grow. Share. Thrive campaign.
