    by Don's Appliances

If you’ve ever been in the market for a range, then you know that it’s not as simple as going to the appliance store and just picking any ol’ one out. We wish it was that easy, but there are different types, prices, sizes, styles, and features to all take into consideration before coming to a decision and locking down the right one for you and your family.

So, whether you’re just doing a little research or are actively planning to replace your current range, our range buying guide will help you know what’s best for your lifestyle.

    What is a Range?

When you combine the fiery passion of the stove and the immense power of the oven into one appliance, you get a robust range built for the most delicate sauces and intense recipes. The range is not only the workhorse of the kitchen, but it’s generally the focal point too so it plays a huge role in your cooking space’s aesthetic.

Most households use a range in their kitchen because they are easy to install and maintain, have a professional and sleek design, and are less expensive than a wall oven and cooktop bought individually. In fact, we offer ranges that start extremely low so you don’t have to stress out financially in order to cook well.

    Types of Ranges

It’s important to know what kind of fuel source is available in your home before choosing a range. If your home is lacking a gas supply, the answer is simple, but if there is a gas line, then you can choose between any of the following fuel sources.

    Electric

When your home has no gas hookups but a 240-volt power outlet, your options are limited to an electric range (unless you decide to have a gas line run to your residence eventually). While that may sound like you’re settling with something undesirable, the truth is electric ranges are a favorite among many—especially bakers! The heating elements of an electric oven have been known to provide even heating which ends up cooking food better than a gas oven does. The smooth-top range stove is also easier to clean and overall costs less initially.

    Gas

Most professional chefs out there look to gas ranges because they are given more control when fluctuating temperatures on the stove. The open flame allows you to instantly heat up dishes with the utmost precision; whereas, electric stoves take time to heat up or cool down. And while electric ranges tend to be less expensive up front, gas will cost you less in utility bills. If you cook a lot, the savings will add up!

    Dual Fuel Type

If your home is set up with both gas and electric hookups, then your kitchen is ready for the best of both worlds with a dual fuel range. You’ll get a gas cooktop which gives you more control of the heat, and you’ll also get an electric oven to ensure everything is evenly baked. So, if you’re looking for a range to inspire your inner Rachael Ray, you’ll want what the professionals are using.

    Range Configurations

When deciding on your next range, whether it is a gas, electric, or a dual fuel source, you’ll need to take these two styles into account before making a purchase.

    Free-Standing Ranges

This is the most common type of range and is the easiest to install. Free-standing ranges come with finished sides so they can be placed anywhere the proper hookups are located. They can go between cabinets or they can stand alone, the choice is yours! They also have a back control panel which works well in preventing food from splattering all over your walls.

    Slide-In Ranges

If you’re looking for a seamless and more custom look, slide-in ranges may be more up your alley. They generally come with unfinished sides which allows them to sit flush with your cabinetry. You won’t find a backsplash on these guys and instead the controls will be placed either in the front or on top of the cooktop.

    Measurements

It’s time to grab your tape measure and figure out the dimensions of your range’s new home! This is a very crucial part since even the slightest measurements off can end up in an appliance not fitting. For that reason, we suggest measuring the space of your where you would like your range to go and not your current or old appliance.

    1. Start by measuring the floor to the top of the cook surface and also to the bottom of the cabinet or range hood it will sit under to get the height. This will ensure you can get the cooktop level with the countertops and also know how much space your range is allowed so as to not get something too large.
    2. Next, if you are planning to slide your range in-between cabinets, it’s best to measure from the left cabinet or countertop to the right side.
    3. Lastly, measure from the front of your range to the back of it, but also take into account the entire depth of the space. Avoid measuring the handle or knobs.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention this, but always be sure to measure at least twice to make sure you get accurate measurements!
