The Grind vs 1HP Disposal

by Mitchell Weidner

What makesThe Grind any different from the other thousand disposals on the market? I'm going to start with the best part, 10 years no questions asked warranty. If we can't fix it, we replace it, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. It doesn’t matter if you're trying to get rid of a dead man's finger, like Beth from Good Girls or dispose of food you didn’t like for dinner, we don’t ask questions! Prior to becoming a sales associate at our WATERSOURCE location, I installed appliances in our Delivery and Installation Department for 6 and 1/2 years. As an installer, the biggest pain in installing disposals is hardwiring it into the bottom of the disposal, behind that little panel. Not with The Grind, it comes with an attached power cord ready to plug in. Another pain from an installer standpoint, is the 3-bolt mounting assembly being flat-head bolts. Once again not with The Grind, Phillips baby!! The dishwasher drain port plug is easily removed, not breaking into six little pieces, that you have to fish out before installing. On a side note, I would always drain your dishwasher into your disposal, instead of a standpipe. Why you may ask? If your plumbing decides to back up, with your drain hooked up to your disposal, it will back up into your sink. Instead of backing up that standpipe and all over the cabinet floor and possibly through to the tile or hardwood floor, then subfloor and the ceiling below, it will now drain out the dishwasher.

The Grind is made of 1 1/4 of straight raw horsepower, one of the few on the market, especially with this type of warranty. If the 1 1/4 horse is a little overkill for you, we have the 3/4 horse with the same warranty. ”The Grind” has a sleek black, plastic sound shell, helping to take away some of that not so soothing vibrating sound. All stainless steel moving parts inside, compared to others that have galvanized steel, that eventually break down, no Bueno. With the purchase of a 1 1/4 (DG125) horsepower or 3/4 (DG75) horsepower Grind, you get a free gift! The Silver Guard, an industrial yet stylish necklace for the throat of your disposal. Its powerful magnets are meant to capture most of the metal objects that may fall through the removable splash guard. This will come in handy being the fortunate family member that inherited Aunt Mary's un-matching silverware collection.

Let's talk about this removable splash guard. One of the biggest complaints I used to hear about other disposals was that it didn't suck like their old one or it didn't drain like it use to. The easiest fix to this problem was to modify the splash guard a bit by cutting some of the rubber off the fins, allowing it would drain properly. I have to say, unfortunately, this has not changed, the only thing that makes it different is that it’s removable and can be modified easier and cleaner. After installing my first Grind, one of the first things I noticed was that the stainless steel sink flange did not have a logo or emblem on it. As an installer and a consumer, I have to say this is awesome. The last thing an installer wants to deal with after wrestling with a disposal is trying to make the logo straight. The last thing a consumer wants to see after spending a thousand dollars on a new sink is a crooked disposal logo.
