We constantly hear opinions from all different directions regarding how long an appliance lasts. Refrigerators to microwaves, dishwashers to ranges, and washers to dryers. We're here to give you the reality of what to expect with a new washer. The expected lifespan for a new washer is on average, 7 years. I know what you're thinking...7 years?! What do you mean 7 years?! My old one lasted 20 years. A lot has changed over the years. Electronics being the most important. The washers are adding a lot more features and controls to help with different kinds of garments and materials going through the washing machine.
How to Prolong the Lifespan of a Washing Machine:
1. Use less detergent!
LESS IS MORE! Crazy, right?! We are so inclined to think that the more detergent we add, the cleaner our clothes get. But it actually makes it worse. The washer isn't running long enough to work out all of the detergents that saturate into the garments. So, it sits in the clothes and can wear out the color of the garment as well. Even worse, the detergent starts to build up on the washer drum and can cause your unit to smell since it is not getting enough air circulation. Which is why a lot of people leave their front load washer door open. But, if you just.....
2. Wash your washer!
Some of the washers have a preset cycle to "wash the washer". This cycle is best done when nothing is in the unit. If the unit has steam, the steam will also help clean the washer. By doing this, it helps break down the detergent build-up and mold or bacteria that can form in the washer.
3. Don't overstuff it!
It is important to let the unit work the water through the garments and material you are putting in it. Some of the units have maintenance! Make sure you are caring for the unit. A washer can be like a vehicle. If you don't get the oil changed, you can expect problems. If you don't clean out the dispenser and report if there is a problem, the more problems can occur.
